Biodiversity and Agriculture are Intertwined
Our commitment to advocate for actions that protect, conserve, and restore biological diversity extends beyond corporate social responsibility. Biodiversity and agriculture are closely related because farming has a measurable impact on the ecosystem in which it occurs, each system of which has been evolving and growing for thousands of years. We’re dedicating time and resources to several key initiatives that are supporting biodiversity.
Honey Bee Health
Honey bees pollinate more than one-third of the world’s crops. There have been observed honey bee colony losses in recent years, and research has identified the Varroa mite as a threat to the species. We perform ecological assessments on a regular basis that assist us in creating products that are compatible with local ecosystems. We also maintain partnerships to share research findings and develop practices that support honey bee health.
The Monarch Butterfly
Monarchs depend on milkweed for a place to lay their eggs and to support caterpillar growth. The Monarch’s migration corridor extends from Mexico to Canada, and we support creating habitat in these areas and educating communities on how they can help support this beloved species. Monarch habitat can also support a diversity of species, including honey bees, native bees, birds, and other butterflies. There is an opportunity for society at large to help build monarch habitat by planting it in community gardens and backyards.
Modern Agriculture
Since agriculture depends so closely on the land, it’s important for us to understand the ways we impact it. We help educate communities and farmers around the world on how to practice agriculture that sustains our ecosystem, especially in developing countries, and we often collaborate with other organizations for this effort.
What Does Monsanto Do To Help Support Biodiversity?
Our commitment to helping protect and support biodiversity includes developing products and tools with consideration to their impact on nature, and partnering with others to share information, research, and innovations.
Pipeline
One of our considerations when developing new products and tools is the impact on biodiversity. Data connectivity, measurement tools, in-field sensors, high-yielding seed, and more help keep farming productive without harming species that share the land with farmers.
