Conceiving New Growing Tools

Data Science

We’re working to create tools to help farmers collect and analyze data about their land and resources. This allows farmers to maximize the effectiveness of all the tools they use. We also use data analytics to drive many of our platforms, including RNAi technology, greenhouse automation, metabolomics, and automated screening.

From seed genetics to environmental conditions, anything that affects farm production will be able to be measured and analyzed.

Digital technology is already helping farmers collect information in the field. It is expected to someday allow them to monitor each plot of land to determine precisely what it needs to produce crops that thrive, while reducing the use of resources that are not necessary to support the crop.

Why is precision in farming so important?

The answer is similar to the role precision plays in other activities, like baking. Small variabilities in the quantity of ingredients can lead to huge differences in taste and texture. Just like we use measuring cups and spoons to maintain precision when baking, farmers use data science to decide how much water, fertilizer, and other inputs are needed to grow and harvest the best crop.

Other data applications for farmers include solutions that help them plant the right amount of seeds in the field to help maximize seed performance.

Data science offers huge potential for farmers; the more easily farmers can see and understand what’s happening in their field, the better able they are to make sustainable choices, both as a steward of the land and as a business owner.
