Dicamba and the Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System
Helping farmers protect their crops from troublesome weeds is a key focus for Bayer. Weeds steal sunlight, water, and nutrients from crops and can ruin a harvest. To effectively manage weeds, farmers need access to a variety of crop protection tools.
Dicamba and XtendiMax® with VaporGrip® Technology
XtendiMax® with VaporGrip® Technology (“XtendiMax”) is Bayer’s dicamba-based herbicide offering to help soybean and cotton farmers control weeds, including the infamous Palmer Amaranth (aka “pigweed”). An individual pigweed can grow quickly to 10-feet tall and can produce half a million seeds that will infest farm fields if left uncontrolled. In fact, pigweeds can lead to 79 percent yield loss in soybeans if left uncontrolled.1
Throughout the 2018 season, individual growers, retailers and custom applicators told us they had successful on-target applications of XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology over broad acreage of Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybean and cotton with XtendFlex® Technology. Growers continue to tell us they’re pleased with the outstanding weed control. In fact, soybean growers surveyed over the last two years reported 95 percent weed control satisfaction with XtendiMax.*
We’ve also seen that consistent with previous years that showed a 5.7 bu/A advantage vs. competitive systems**, early internal and third-party herbicide system trials from the 2018 season are showing strong results. We’ll be sharing final herbicide system trial results in the coming months.
In 2018 our dicamba-tolerant varieties were grown on twice as many acres as last season—approximately 25 million acres in 2017 and 50 million acres in 2018. We expect that this tool, as part of a complete integrated weed management system, will continue to be a vital component on many farmer’s operations, particularly as current projections remain at more than 60 million acres of Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans and cotton with XtendFlex Technology to be planted in 2019.

Preparing for a Successful 2019 Growing Season
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced continued registration, including label changes, for XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology. Building on the success of the 2017 and 2018 seasons, this continued registration ensures that growers will have access to this vital weed-control tool for the 2019 season and beyond.
Among the highlights of the EPA issued label for XtendiMax, which remains a Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP), this product is only approved for sale to and use by certified applicators. Annual mandatory applicator training and record keeping remain important requirements. Additional changes are included as outlined on the label. Check out our press release for more. With the approval of the EPA federal label, 34 soybean and cotton-producing states will now work through their approval processes.
Bayer is planning a robust training program to educate certified applicators on all label requirements. Ahead of the 2018 season, public and private sectors trained more than 96,000 growers and applicators. We’re clearly seeing that training has been effective, and we’re excited to build on that momentum for the 2019 season. We look forward to focusing on increasing awareness of nearby sensitive crops; ongoing discussions around other herbicide applications and the impacts those can have on non-dicamba tolerant fields, and informing growers about new tools like the sprayer system cleaner from Adjuvants Unlimited to help with hygiene and sprayer system and handling equipment cleanout; among other topics.

Bayer has also taken a variety of steps to help ensure customers use XtendiMax successfully in 2019, including:
- Evolving and tailoring our training based on insights gained from the 2018 season
- Enhancing the RRXtend Spray App to offer growers tools and resources to help them plan for successful and on-target applications
- Continuing our technical support call center, 1-844-RRXTEND, to help customers easily access information on best practices and application requirements

More Collaboration and Dialogue
Collaboration among the agriculture community is key to the success of any new agricultural technology, including XtendiMax. Bayer is fully committed to ensuring ample opportunity for dialogue and information sharing. During the 2018 season, we expanded our academic collaborations to generate additional data regarding the low-volatility profile of XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology. We provided grants and sponsorships to several Land Grant Universities across soybean- and cotton-producing states to support various weed management research and education. We worked with 13 university programs to further evaluate VaporGrip® Technology and the results reaffirm the low volatility profile under various localized conditions. We also supported multi-faceted weed management trials at 21 universities. Read more about these collaborative efforts here.
As we further prepare for a successful 2019 season, Bayer will build on collaborations from the 2018 season, continuing to work closely with growers and applicators, grower associations, state regulators, universities and others.
Comprehensive Testing of our Dicamba Product
Dicamba, the active ingredient in XtendiMax, was first approved in 1967 and has been used by farmers, homeowners, and others to control weeds for decades. XtendiMax, which was approved for use by the EPA in November 2016, is unique because it reduces volatility potential by 90 percent compared to the older dicamba-based products.
Before it was approved for use, XtendiMax was comprehensively tested to ensure it could be used safely and effectively. These tests were conducted according to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards, which require the highest level of rigor and standards to ensure data is sound and of high quality. These tests confirmed the significant reduction in volatility compared to previous generations of dicamba products.
Bayer continues to conduct field trials of XtendiMax® with VaporGrip® Technology in a wide range of soil types and environmental conditions. During the 2018 season, we conducted several internal trials following GLP in Arizona, Nebraska, Missouri, North Dakota, Illinois, Minnesota and Australia. - Australia: We completed a 36-acre field trial in Australia focused on measuring flux (i.e., volatility) under extreme temperature conditions and for larger spray acreages. Consistent with previous GLP studies conducted in the US, the results clearly show—even under extreme environmental conditions—volatility is not a significant contributor to off-target movement when XtendiMax is used according to the label requirements. - Arizona: In Arizona we measured off-target movement and plant effects to non-dicamba tolerant soybeans under extreme weather conditions and over large acreage representative of a commercial scale application. Dicamba will kill crops that are not tolerant to dicamba. Contact your Monsanto dealer or refer to Monsanto’s Technology Use Guide for recommended weed control programs.
Performance may vary, from location to location and from year to year, as local growing, soil and weather conditions may vary. Growers should evaluate data from multiple locations and years whenever possible and should consider the impacts of these conditions on the grower’s fields.
