Carbon Neutral

Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture is a significant undertaking that no one organization can do alone. That’s why Monsanto is collaborating with farmers and others to address this serious issue. We are also taking action within our operations to reduce our own carbon footprint.

Adopting Carbon Neutral Seed Production

As announced in November 2015, we have set a goal to turn our entire operation carbon neutral by 2021 through operational changes in combination with special programs for farmers.

We will drive carbon neutral crop production in our seed business with the goal of eliminating that portion of our carbon footprint altogether. Monsanto will also advocate for commercial farmers to adopt carbon neutral crop production methods.

Pledge to Reduce Operational GHG Emissions

As announced in May 2015, we have set a goal to reduce the operational greenhouse gas emissions intensity in our crop protection operations by an additional 22 percent by 2020, based on our 2010 baseline. This represents a cumulative reduction of 45 percent from 2002. We’re targeting our crop protection business because it is the largest contributor to our company’s carbon footprint, making it the place in our operations where we can have the greatest positive impact.

Testing Products In Light of Climate Change

Over the past 20 years, many of our products have played a role in helping agriculture adapt to and mitigate climate change. These products include cutting-edge technologies that lower the number of times farmers enter the field to spray crops, enable conservation tillage and employ precision agriculture to mitigate climate change.

Establishing an Internal Carbon Price

We have established an internal carbon price, which will be used to evaluate the climate impact of our capital investments moving forward.
